Nike's Mercurial debuted at the 1998 World Cup on the feet of Brazil's Ronaldo (R9), in a metallic-silver colourway that broke from the black leather orthodoxy of the time. Its lightweight synthetic upper made speed, not durability, the whole point — and founded the silo that the Superfly and Vapor still split between them: the Superfly the loaded, driving speed boot, the Vapor the featherweight one.
