Copa

The boot that made kangaroo leather the standard for a control boot. adidas built it in 1979, ahead of the 1982 World Cup in Spain: a soft k-leather upper over a moulded rubber outsole, with a fold-over tongue and extra leather bracing at the heel. The leather broke in to the shape of the foot and then stayed comfortable, which is why it kept selling for decades after the boots around it turned to plastic. Made in Germany, hand-stitched, and since the early 2000s the best-selling football boot in the world.

Before it, a leather boot was something you endured until it softened. The Copa Mundial was built to feel broken-in from the start and to last — comfort and touch as the whole point, not speed or gimmicks. That idea, "a boot you barely notice on your foot," is what the whole modern Copa line still chases.

The reboot. adidas brought the Copa name back as a modern performance boot, keeping a kangaroo-leather forefoot for touch but adding a stretchy compression tongue and its lightweight SprintFrame outsole — so the classic leather feel arrived on a boot quick enough for the modern game.

A fit-focused refinement of the reboot: an internal support cage and foam padding under the leather locked the foot down without hiding the barefoot feel the Copa is meant to have.

The big leather leap. It introduced Fusionskin, a seamless leather-and-synthetic upper with the stitching taken out, so the whole front of the boot flexed as one soft piece. It also brought the first laceless Copa (the 19+), proving a control boot could go laceless without giving up its touch.

A refinement of the 19: the Fusionskin upper was reworked to soak up less water and drop weight, so the soft-leather feel survived a wet pitch. Sold alongside the laceless 20+.

Comfort engineered into the boot, not just the leather. Soft inserts around the collar and heel ("SensePods") cushioned the foot into place, and the whole boot was shaped anatomically so it felt moulded to the wearer.
