The boot that made kangaroo leather the standard for a control boot. adidas built it in 1979, ahead of the 1982 World Cup in Spain: a soft k-leather upper over a moulded rubber outsole, with a fold-over tongue and extra leather bracing at the heel. The leather broke in to the shape of the foot and then stayed comfortable, which is why it kept selling for decades after the boots around it turned to plastic. Made in Germany, hand-stitched, and since the early 2000s the best-selling football boot in the world.
Before it, a leather boot was something you endured until it softened. The Copa Mundial was built to feel broken-in from the start and to last — comfort and touch as the whole point, not speed or gimmicks. That idea, "a boot you barely notice on your foot," is what the whole modern Copa line still chases.
